In the dreich midwinter

In the dreich midwinter, rain and wind and rain

Darkness hangs upon us, noon day sun is grey

Hearts are all left wondering if there’s cause for hope

As we huddle close on days as black as smoke

This cannot be all that life is here to give

Vanity and vapours, all that is beneath

Turning our eyes skyward, breathing out in sighs

Yet in all this darkness eternal light still shines

Angels longed to see this, kings and shepherds too

As the Light of life did emerge from the womb

Yet, he’s in the shadow of a Roman cross

Knowing that true life’s price is that awful cost

Still, he reigns in glory, though the darkness stays

It is now a garment, torn and worn and frayed

In the dreich midwinter, let not hope be lost

For God is our Saviour, Christ’s victorious
